This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a test for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard body horror, but within Together lies a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
