Prime Television Selections: Seven Essential Motion Pictures This Coming Week

Highlighted Choice

This Satirical Thriller

The filmmaker's daring critique examines the tyranny of female beauty as well as the perceived horrors of advancing years. Demi Moore delivers a masterful acting turn in the role of Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress reduced to hosting an aerobics show on television. Forced aside by her unscrupulous employer her manager Harvey, she undergoes an enigmatic and gruesome process called the Substance. This generates a youthful duplicate called Sue, leading to a steadily more toxic connection between them. Friday 17 October, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This suspenseful thriller stars the talented actress as Laura, an ace reporter who opts for some time off from covering world issues to embark on an opulent ship accompanied by an ailing Scandinavian billionaire and donor, her spouse, as well as other affluent individuals. However when an unknown lady disappears from the ship one night and all passengers claims she was never there, Laura's investigative instincts awaken. Out now, the Netflix platform

Presence

Soderbergh tests his creative boundaries with this nifty ghostly tale shot entirely through the eyes of a ghost. When a household including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their recent residence, the camera – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. The daughter appears conscious of the poltergeist, and the entity appears defensive toward her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, with a twist that could catch you off guard. October 11th, afternoon and evening times, the Sky channel

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Nicolas Cage fully commits to his cult stardom via this self-referential adventure. He acts as a self-obsessed celebrity playing himself who takes on a $1m payday to attend a festive event in Mallorca for billionaire superfan Javi. Contacted by the intelligence agency to investigate the alleged criminal, the actor's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” comes in handy. This Saturday, 9pm, Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

The director's contained scarefest remains effective despite the lack of a follow-up. Located in the late 70s in Denver, multiple kidnappings has made the local kids on edge. After Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and held captive in a dungeon, he dreads the worst. However, the old telephone on the wall repeatedly calls, with ghostly voices offering help, while the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister might rescue him. An effective horror. October 11th, nighttime, on Film4

This Dramatic Portrait

In the battle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for materialism in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish biopic of the disgraced televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. Garfield portrays the greedy Jim, who proclaims at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye set about monetising the people's religious faith. It's a riot of poor styling, bad makeup and hypocrisy, however Jessica Chastain succeeds to depict the character with compassion. October 14th, late night, the Film4 channel

The Spy Mystery

This week's second offering from the filmmaker is a intelligence thriller as sharp like the turtlenecks used by Fassbender's intelligence officer. He receives a mission to discover a double agent among the team from a group of five – among them is his spouse. Each performer are experts of understated style, resulting in an engaging mind game of truth or lie unfolds. Additional actors take part the intelligent intelligence fun. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, the Sky channel
