Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing these medications should be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to original mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the medication describe a intense resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," said one woman.

The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
