Marnus Labuschagne Dropped from Australian ODI Lineup to Face Team India

The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from the three-game ODI series against India, as high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw earning a unexpected selection.

Performance Issues Result in Omission

Labuschagne has been omitted from the one-day international squad after scoring just one run in both of his innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a best innings of 47 in his most recent ten ODI batting appearances.

The 31-year-old has played 68 one-day internationals and accumulated 1,871 runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now work towards a Test team comeback in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on 21 November.

Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Updates

Recent performances suggest of a return to form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw made a hundred for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.

Renshaw could to make his white-ball international debut in the forthcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.

He has played 14 Tests with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also seeking a Test return as Australia seek a fix to their batting top-order problems.

Pace Returns and Injury Updates

Fast bowler Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after having time off since performing well for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.

Big Bash star Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the lead up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.

Skipper Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he hopes to heal from a spinal issue in time to captain Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Team Announcement Strategy and Fixtures

Australia have announced a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-match series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 teams after hitting a ton in the final game against New Zealand to secure a series clean sweep last week.

“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an crucial phase in the preparation for the World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test series ahead.”
